Staff Accountant

Position Reports to: Department Leads


Anticipated time allocation:

70% of time is chargeable client work

30% of your time will be developing your technical accounting skills through on-the-job training, continuing education, and other administrative tasks


Position Summary:

Staff accountants work under the direct supervision of in-charge accountants.  They are expected to complete and review their work in a timely and accurate manner.  Staff accountants should show initiative in obtaining the types of assignments and special projects that will further increase their technical skills.  Direct contact with clients will be done under the supervision of in-charge accountants. Staff accountants should work to understand our clients’ businesses and offer suggestions to in-charge accountants for improving the efficiency of our clients’ accounting functions.

Staff accountants are expected to accomplish progress on goals from their respective career plans, and are expected to show continuous improvement towards building solid technical, teamwork, supervisory, and engagement management skills.


Primary duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Preparing and reviewing bookkeeping for clients
  • Preparing tax returns for individuals and businesses
  • Developing technical knowledge to perform responsibilities of specific audit engagements assigned
  • Assisting in preparing monthly and yearly attest engagements
  • Assisting shareholders and managers in developing additional accounting services for current clients
  • Improving verbal and written communication skills
  • Developing research skills
  • Developing proficiency in attest standards and pronouncements
  • Developing general knowledge of sales tax and payroll tax regulations
  • Developing general understanding of basic income tax laws and regulations
  • Developing proficient knowledge of general office software and other specific accounting, attest, and tax software
  • Adhering to company vision, mission, and values while representing oneself as a model for other team members to follow
  • Participating in professional staff recruiting


Other Functions

  1. Completing projects as requested from time to time by managers and shareholders
  2. Participating in the firm’s practice development efforts through involvement with referral sources, community, and industry activities
  3. Attending continuing education courses in accordance with firm policies



Minimum of four year degree in Business Administration (or similar field) with a major/emphasis in accounting

Previous accounting experience is preferred, but not required, willing to train the right candidate

CPA certificate is not required; however, this individual is expected to progress professionally towards obtaining a CPA certificate
