Contryman Associates 70th Anniversary

Contryman Associates, P.C., a Certified Public Accounting firm, is celebrating 70 years in Grand Island. We are so proud to have offered solutions for the success of our clients for 7 decades. This is a milestone that only a very few businesses reach.

A brief history of our firm:

Contryman Associates was begun by Orin Contryman in late 1939 with an office in downtown Grand Island. Mr. Contryman was one of the first Certified Public Accountants in Nebraska. At that time, he and one employee, a secretary, and his wife, Elsie Contryman, provided traditional accounting services including tax and estate planning. Unfortunately, Mr. Contryman died in a plane crash in 1964. Elsie still lives in Grand Island.

In 1963, we opened an office in Hastings. Over the next 40 years or so, we opened offices in Lexington, Kearney, Central City, Geneva, and Scottsbluff.

We currently have 65 team members with an additional 7 who work for our affiliated companies, Advanced Livestock Tracker and Contryman Wealth Advisors. We have 28 team members in our Grand Island location.

We are pleased to announce that we will be building a new facility in Hastings just north of Lochland Country Club on Hwy 281. We are hoping to be finished with the project and moved in by fall, 2010.

Our Vision

For the past several years, our firm has been working toward the goal of becoming the firm against which others are measured - in a positive and inspiring way. For our clients, we want to be the firm that business owners, professionals, and other influential members of our communities rely on as their key business and financial advisors. For our communities, we want to make the most valuable contributions of time and talent. For our team members, we want to be the firm for which they are proud to work and we want to continue to attract top graduates in accounting and finance as well as top performers who have worked for other firms. For our profession, we want to set the standard for excellence to which other firms may aspire.

  • We have established career plans for each of our team members so that we can be sure they know the steps they will need to take to be successful in our firm. This process has been so successful for our firm that we are marketing a web-based version of our Professional Excellence Path to other professional services firms.
  • We have become the firm against which others are measured when it comes to technology. Technology helps us be more efficient and effective so that we can do a better job for our clients. One new piece of technology that we are working on is the development of a secure web portal that will allow our clients to have access to everything from a tax return to payroll and accounting reports. Our portal will also allow businesses to transmit their payroll information so that we can calculate pay and withholding for their employees or for clients to send us their bookkeeping information so we can create reports to help them run their businesses.
  • We have increased team member training, even hired a learning and training coordinator to help ensure that everyone is getting the high quality ongoing training they need to help us achieve our vision – well beyond what is required of a CPA or a CPA firm employee.
  • We are allowing each of our team members to determine their ideal work/life balance. We have team members who have elected to work part time; others who work 4 – 10-hour days each week. We have the technology to allow some of our team members to work from home offices or from a client’s offices.
  • To help our business clients in every financial area, we have developed the Contryman Business Solutions Process. This process helps us address everything from tax planning and profitability analysis to business continuation and succession planning.
  • We were one of the first firms in Nebraska to offer financial services to our clients. We started Contryman Wealth Advisors in 1998 as the result of client requests for financial planning services from their accountant. To help assure that we address all of a client’s financial concerns, we use the Method 10™ process which is a financial planning methodology that encompasses all wealth care needs within a financial plan.
  • We also own Advanced Livestock Tracker, cattle feedlot management software. We currently have users in 10 states. We recently released a windows based version of the software and are marketing it to feedlots nationwide.

We believe that by working to be the firm against which others are measured with these and many other initiatives, we will be able to continue to provide solutions for our clients’ success for at least another 70 years.
